New Zealand Travel + Work 12Months

• Hi,
  
  I am looking at doing 12 months work and holiday in New Zealand, travelling around both North and South Island.
  
  Is it better to use Hostels or 6 months renting on each Island?
  
  How easy is it to find somewhere to rent for just 6 months?
  
  What are averages prices?
