Moving To New Zealand

So, I'll be traveling to New Zealand from the US next month, to see my girlfriend. I'll be staying with her family while I'm there. What I really want to do, is remain there. But I'm unsure how to proceed with getting a job, etc. What permit I may need. I read about the work permit on this site, and it said the following:

"It isn’t usually applicable to those intending to take up permanent residence in the country and applies mostly to contract workers and other short-term employees."

So, what do I do if I want to get a job once I'm in the country. My expierience is in the retail industry.
