Residence Permit validity for family

• I have been living in germany for almost five years along with my wife and Son. They went back to India in February for completion of my wife's studies. Now we are planning that they come back. They ahve a residence permit that is valid till next year, but I have heard that if they are out of Germany for 6 months (it is 7 for them now), they may need a new Visa.
  
  Is this true ? Or is their current Residence Permit Still Valid ?
